This is an article from “The New York Times” which analyzes the relevance of the social networks like Facebook to promote the success of “American Idol”, the equivalent of “Operación Triunfo” in Spain, which has more than 5 million of followers at Facebook, and like a brand and like a business. The TV program “American Idol” encourages the followers of this to invest $1 to send a customized videos to their friends, recorded by the ten finalists of the show through an application called “Cameo Stars”. The contestants of the TV program greets the birthday by Facebook. This gives the impression of something customized because it seems that the contestant devotes personally to you.

When it was introduced on Facebook in August 2010, the producer, “Cameo Stars”, wanted to take advantage of the devotion that people have by the celebrities and the producer wanted to exploit the market for the virtual products.

It seems to be a really good idea because it is entrepreneurial but it doesn't stop being impersonal. It plays with the devotion that people have for this kind of celebrities but, in my opinion, it can't substitute a birthday greeting made by a friend or somebody closer to you like someone of your family, because it is made from the hearth.

  1. This article from “The new York Times” talks about the relevance of social networks such as Facebook in relation with TV shows like American Idol.
They have created an application on Facebook called “Cameo stars”, that gives you the opportunity to enjoy a birthday greeting from your favorite “American Idol” just investing 1 buck. This is a pretty good initiative by the TV program “American Idol” because you can be really surprised and excited by just paying 1 dollar.
Because it is much cheaper than others applications that are involved with celebrities, “Cameo stars” want an investor on their idea so they do not have to raise the prize of their service.
It seems to be a really good idea because people who you won’t even able to see in person, can give you or you can make them give birthday greeting to your friends. It would seem that they know you forever, because only people that know you will give you their greetings.
As Marc said it is obvious that can´t substitute a birthday greeting made by a member of your family or friend, but it will excited you as much as another one.

  2. I absolutely agree with my partner that it is imposible to replace the lovely greetings that makes family on our birthday to a greeting of someone that doesn't have a closer relation to us.
I think that creating this initiative is a succesful idea because everybody wants the other's greetings as always creaes illusion.
Moreover, it's sorprising that only paying 1 dollar you can have the oportunity to congratulate or give your bests greetings to an idol. It's is amazing because casing of celebrities, this application would be very expensive!
